HOUSTON (Oct. 20, 2005) – On Sunday, November 13 at 5 p.m., the Doctors Orchestra of Houston (www.DoctorsOrchestraHouston.org) will perform its first concert of the 2005-2006 season, titled Spirit of the Gypsies, to benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children. The concert, held in the Cullen Theater at the Wortham Center, will feature The Gypsies, Houston’s award-winning European-style strolling and ethnic dance band. The unique program will feature Festive March by Dvorak, Moldau by Smetana, Symphony No. 4 by Schumann and a collection of Hungarian works including Hungarian Csardas, Szuresti Dance, Hora from Bucovina and other Hungarian favorites.
The Doctors Orchestra is a community orchestra made up of 85 physicians, dentists, medical students, biomedical scientists and other allied health professionals as well as music lovers. The Orchestra is sponsored by TIAA-CREF, a national financial services group of companies and the leading provider of retirement services in the academic, research, medical and cultural fields. With this support, the Doctors Orchestra raises funds for medical charities, like this concert’s beneficiary, Shriners Hospitals for Children Houston.
Shriners Hospitals for Children is a network of pediatric specialty hospitals where children under the age of 18 receive excellent medical care absolutely free of charge. They are dedicated to helping children with complex orthopedic and burn problems. Houston Shriners Hospital treats children with orthopedic problems and also has become known for its work with children with cerebral palsy.
